What are pre/postbiotics? I've only ever heard of probiotics.
Most brands claiming to use probiotics in skincare are bending the truth. The "pro" in probiotics means living organisms, yet genuine probiotics are rarely used in skincare due to their incompatibility with other ingredients and strict storage and transit requirements.
In reality, most so-called "probiotic" skincare actually contains prebiotics or postbiotics.
Scientifically, the ideal formulation shouldn't contain live microbes but rather fragmented bacterial components (called "lysates"). These lysates activate positive changes in your skin - not whole bacteria, which would die long before they reached your skin.
Live bacteria can't survive in skincare products. Many ingredients, particularly preservatives, are designed to kill microbes - including any "good" bacteria. Additionally, packaging can hinder bacterial survival -oxygen exposure can kill strains like Bifidobacterium.
