Barrier-friendly routines for sensitive, reactive and compromised skin.
Simple step-by-step guides to help you care for and soothe a range of skin concerns.
A true skin support system
Our goal is to help your skin feel calm, comfortable and supported every day. Salvida products are formulated to nurture sensitive, reactive and eczema-prone skin by helping your barrier feel more resilient and cared for.
Each formula is thoughtfully made without silicones, sulphates, parabens, mineral oils, drying alcohols, fragrance, steroids and essential oils – ingredients that are common irritants and known triggers for many. Instead, we focus on barrier-friendly, clinically tested ingredients that help your skin feel soothed, hydrated and protected as it moves through its own natural repair process.
While Salvida can offer meaningful barrier support, it isn’t a cure or treatment for any skin condition. Flare-ups can be influenced by many factors – including diet, stress, the products you’re using and your individual immune response. Our products are here to support your skin, but they aren’t a replacement for medical treatment or personalised advice from a healthcare professional.
All Salvida products are third-party tested on sensitive skin, but every individual’s skin has its own unique sensitivities.
Patch testing involves applying a small amount of product to a discreet area (we recommend the inner forearm) and observing how your skin responds over 24–48 hours.
It helps ensure your skin tolerates a new product before applying it more broadly - especially important for compromised, reactive or eczema-prone skin.
We strongly recommend patch testing any new product you’re adding to your routine.
A self-patch test helps check for irritation or allergic reactions before applying a product more widely. It is not the same as a professional medical patch test performed by a dermatologist (which uses standardized allergens under controlled conditions).
Always test one new product at a time.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Choose a discreet test area on clean, intact skin - preferably the inner forearm or just behind the ear (skin here is relatively similar to facial skin but less visible if a reaction occurs). Avoid broken, irritated, sunburned, or recently exfoliated skin.
- Gently cleanse the area with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and pat completely dry. Do not apply other products underneath.
- Apply a small amount of the product (about the size of a pea or a nickel) in a thin, even layer. Use the same thickness and amount you would normally use.
- For leave-on products (serums, moisturizers, treatments): Leave it undisturbed for 24–48 hours (or longer if you have sensitive skin). Do not wash the area.
For rinse-off products (cleansers, masks): Leave on for the recommended time, then rinse as directed, and monitor the area afterward. - Optionally cover with a breathable bandage if needed to keep the product in place, but avoid getting it wet.
- Check the area regularly for reactions. For better accuracy (especially with potentially sensitizing ingredients), reapply once or twice daily to the same spot for 5–10 days while monitoring.
- If no reaction occurs after the full period, the product is more likely to be tolerated. Still introduce it gradually to larger areas.
Important tips: Test only one product at a time. Stop immediately and wash the area with a gentle cleanser if any concerning symptoms appear. Results can vary if your skin barrier is already compromised.
True allergic reactions (allergic contact dermatitis) are immune-mediated (Type IV delayed hypersensitivity). They typically develop 24–72 hours (sometimes up to several days) after exposure and may include:
- Persistent itching (often intense)
- Redness or discoloration that may spread beyond the exact application site
- Swelling or raised bumps/papules
- Small blisters or vesicles
- Scaling, dryness, or a rash that worsens over time or recurs with re-exposure
These reactions can last days even after removing the product and may indicate sensitization to a specific ingredient (e.g., certain fragrances, preservatives, or other allergens). Note the product and ingredients for future avoidance. If the reaction is severe, spreads widely, or includes systemic symptoms (e.g., significant swelling, difficulty breathing — rare), seek medical help promptly. A dermatologist can perform professional patch testing to identify the exact allergen.Irritant reactions (non-allergic) often appear sooner, stay localized, and improve once the product is removed.
Stinging, burning, or tingling that occurs immediately or within minutes to a few hours of application is typically not a true allergy.
Instead, it is most often a sensory or irritant response linked to a compromised (damaged) skin barrier.
Your skin barrier (the outermost layer of the stratum corneum) acts like a protective shield made of skin cells held together by lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids).
When this barrier is healthy and intact, it limits penetration of substances and protects nerve endings. When it is damaged - from over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, dryness, environmental stress, or prior irritation - the barrier becomes more permeable. This allows ingredients (even mild ones) to reach nerve endings more easily, triggering immediate stinging, burning, or tingling without involving the immune system.
Key differences:
- Stinging from barrier damage/irritation: Quick onset, often dose-dependent, localized, no immune involvement, improves as the barrier repairs (with gentle care, moisturizers, and avoidance of further stressors).
- True allergy: Delayed onset, primarily itching + visible inflammatory changes (redness, bumps, blisters), immune-mediated, recurs on re-exposure even in small amounts.
Mild transient stinging can sometimes occur with active ingredients (like certain acids) even on healthy skin, but persistent or strong stinging during testing usually signals the need to pause, focus on barrier repair, and reassess tolerance later. It does not mean you have an uncommon allergy.
Disclaimer: This is general educational information based on common dermatological guidance for at-home product testing. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Individual responses vary, and persistent, severe, or unclear reactions should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
Barrier NPR+ is your multi-tasking balm for sensitive, irritated and barrier-challenged skin. It helps calm red, itchy and irritated-feeling skin whilst double-tasking as an everyday barrier balm.
To figure out how best to use it, find the routine that suits your skin in the next section.
💡 Top tip: When layering Barrier NPR+ over Bodyguard, always allow Bodyguard to soak in for 5 minutes first.
Yes, it is not unusual for the skin to appear more dry and flaky after starting Barrier NPR+, provided any visible redness is simultaneously subsiding.
Barrier NPR+ is clinically proven not to increase hydration levels in the skin. It is specifically formulated to reduce visible redness, calm the skin and create an invisible barrier that helps shield it from external irritants.
If you are looking for a product designed to provide hydration, we recommend Bodyguard instead.
This temporary dry or flaky appearance often occurs because a compromised skin barrier has typically been through a period of extreme distress and inflammation, causing the outer layers of skin to die off.
As the skin begins to calm and visible redness decreases, those outer layers naturally start to shed.
In this context, the dryness and flaking are generally a positive sign that the skin is progressing toward recovery, as long as redness continues to improve.
At Salvida, we believe in calming the skin first. We only recommend introducing hydration once all visible redness has disappeared, the skin is in maintenance mode (between flares) or the skin is simply dry and dehydrated.
A rich, water-based moisturiser designed as daily moisture therapy for compromised skin™, offering deep, lasting hydration without heaviness.
Bodyguard uses a unique blend of pre- and postbiotics - a trademarked complex specifically designed to rebalance the skin microbiome.
Clinical studies show that after just 15 days of use, this blend significantly reduces two groups of bacteria - Actinobacteria and Firmicutes - by 19% and 38% respectively. These groups are often overrepresented in compromised skin and include Staphylococcus, a Firmicute commonly linked to eczema.
Bodyguard hydrates, comforts dryness, and supports long-term barrier resilience. It pairs with Barrier NPR+ when skin needs both moisture and protection.
💡 Top tip:
Always let Bodyguard soak in for 5 minutes before applying Barrier NPR+ on top.
